This is a concept a friend of mine and I came up with a few years ago. I only have a few of the old sketches so we decided to pick it up again and make some updated drawings and ideas for a huge series of stories based on these dragons.

Here is a roughly summed-up version of the story:

The creatures are called Siirexians (Seer-ex-ian)
They are an advanced species of reptile that reign as dominant species of their world. Humans worship them as Gods and Creators and live alongside the Siirexians as their caretakers and companions.

There are several types of Siirexians, but most dragons are born as "domestics" and must go through religious transformal ceremonies to become anything more. Though controlled breeding of all types of dragons occur within each colony.

A colony is a large population of people living in small villages that surround a single Temple. Each of these temples is the holder of the bloodline for the different types of Siirexians. Monks work closely with these highly intellgent creatures, and the entire society surrounding the temple rely greatly on the dragons they live with.

Different types of dragons are used for different work, play, and environment. Some types of dragons roam wild and are difficult to colonize, such as ice and spirit. These creatures are seen as great mythical creatures of wisdom far beyond that of the colonies, and are not meant for domestication.

The humans in this yet un-named world believe that they were created by the first Siirexians as a companion species and have no other knowledge of their "true" origins. Though the Siirexians are highly intelligent creatures, only a few possess the ability to speak to the humans, mainly "spirit" type Siirexians.

The idea is that every human child born is given a Siirexian egg to hatch and grow with the child and become spiritually bonded to its human companion. They become so connected that if either were to die, the other would soon follow.

Siirexians can live well beyond 300 years and their human, if strongly bonded to the dragon, will age just as slowly and live just as long.

This first sketch is the Domestic variety, which is the most common type and has no significant specialties or talents, other than the fact that if given the proper religious ceremony, can develop into any type of dragon; be it fire, rock, ice, etc.
